Your Sperm Analysis Didn't Come Back the Way You Expected. Now What?
Maybe the numbers were low. Maybe motility wasn't where it should be. Maybe the morphology flag caught you off guard. Maybe your RE mentioned ICSI or donor sperm as next steps and you weren't ready for that conversation.
Or maybe you haven't been tested yet - but you and your partner have been trying for a year, and something isn't working.
Here's what most men don't get told: sperm regenerates every 90 days. Whatever today's numbers look like, the next three months are a real, measurable window to improve them, often significantly.
That's what we do at Lighthouse. We work with men in Jupiter and across Palm Beach County to improve sperm parameters, support hormonal balance, and give you a concrete plan for the next 12 weeks to conception.
Half the Equation Gets Ignored & It Shouldn't
Roughly one-third of infertility cases involve male factors alone. Another third involve both partners. Despite this, men are often tested once, told their numbers are "fine" or "low," and sent home without a plan.
That's not a plan. That's a shrug.
When your partner is doing everything - acupuncture, supplements, tracking, cutting caffeine, managing stress - and you're doing nothing, you're not just missing an opportunity.
You're leaving half the work on her.
Men who get in the game early change the trajectory of the whole process.
Male Fertility Conditions We Work With
The 90-Day Window
Sperm takes approximately 90 days to fully mature.
That means the sperm you produce today is the result of what your body was doing three months ago. And the sperm you'll produce three months from now is being built right now by what you do today.
This is actually the most important thing you can understand about male fertility:
You have a 90-day runway to change the outcome.
Whether you're preparing for IVF, IUI, natural conception, or just want to know you did everything you could, the next 12 weeks matter. And there's real, measurable research showing that acupuncture, lifestyle changes, and targeted treatment during this window can significantly improve sperm parameters.
How Acupuncture Supports Male Fertility
Research on acupuncture and male reproductive health has shown improvements in:
• Sperm concentration and total count
• Motility - especially progressive motility (the sperm that actually swim forward)
• Morphology - the percentage of normally-shaped sperm
• DNA fragmentation - a measure of sperm DNA integrity that affects fertilization and embryo health
• Hormonal balance - particularly testosterone, FSH, and LH
• Blood flow to the testes - which supports sperm production at the source
• Stress-related fertility dysfunction - elevated cortisol directly suppresses testosterone
Acupuncture isn't magic. It works by activating real, measurable systems that affect sperm production at the source: circulation, the nervous system, and hormonal regulation.
What Treatment Actually Looks Like
How often you come in depends on what we're working with.
If you're optimizing sperm quality before IVF, IUI, or natural conception - and your labs are generally in a normal range - most men are in and out of the clinic once a week.
If you have a specific diagnosis we're working to change we will see you more frequently each week. More frequent treatment in that window creates compounding change, which is what moves numbers on a follow-up analysis.
Either way, sessions take about 45–60 minutes. You lie on a treatment table, needles go in, you rest, needles come out. Most patients fall asleep.
Preparing for IVF or IUI
If you and your partner are heading into IVF or IUI, your sperm quality on the day of collection directly affects:
• Fertilization rate — how many eggs fertilize
• Embryo quality — higher-quality sperm produces better-quality embryos
• Implantation and miscarriage risk — DNA fragmentation affects both
• Whether ICSI is needed — improving motility can sometimes move couples from ICSI to standard IVF
The sperm that shows up on collection day is the sperm your body built 90 days earlier. If you start now, you're giving that process a much better foundation.
We coordinate with your partner's fertility clinic and timeline to make sure we're building toward the right date.
Lifestyle Factors That Affect Sperm Quality
Sperm production is more sensitive than most men realize. The following have all been shown in research to affect sperm parameters:
• Heat exposure — saunas, hot tubs, laptops on your lap, heated car seats
• Alcohol — even moderate consumption affects motility and morphology
• Sleep quality — testosterone production happens primarily during deep sleep
• Stress — chronic stress suppresses the hormonal axis that drives sperm production
• Smoking and vaping — direct impact on sperm DNA
• Medications — including some common ones (we'll review with you)
• Diet — especially antioxidant status and processed food intake
• Exercise — both too little and too much (excessive endurance training lowers testosterone)
• Environmental exposures — certain plastics, pesticides, and chemicals
We don't hand you a generic lifestyle PDF. We look at your specific situation and give you the changes that will actually move the needle for you.
If Your Partner Is Already Being Treated
If she's doing acupuncture somewhere, herbs, fertility treatment - anything - you should be in the game too.
Fertility is a two-person process and treating one partner without the other leaves outcomes on the table.
Many couples come to us as a team. We often schedule joint appointments to save time.

I'm Glad I Came
My wife had been doing acupuncture for a few months when Dr. Lisa asked if I'd come in too.
My semen analysis had come back with low motility and we'd been told IVF with ICSI was probably our path forward.
I'll be honest- I didn't really believe it would do anything. I went because my wife asked me to. I showed up once a week, lay on a table, and mostly napped. Three months later we redid the analysis and my motility had nearly doubled. We ended up conceiving without needing ICSI.
I would've never done this on my own. I'm glad I did.

Common Questions About Male Fertility Acupuncture
How long until I see changes in my sperm analysis?
About 90 days. That's how long sperm takes to mature, so a semen analysis before 90 days won't show the full effect of treatment.
Most men retest at the 90-day mark.
How often do I need to come in?
t depends on if you are being treated for a specific diagnosis or to just optimize your sperm.
A consultation with our doctor will determine how frequently you need to come in for treatment.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Not really. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin- nothing like the needles you associate with shots or blood draws.
Most patients don't feel them go in, or feel only a brief, mild sensation. Most fall asleep during treatment.
Does insurance cover this?
Some plans cover acupuncture. We recommend calling your insurance company and asking about coverage.
We provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement.
Is this going to be weird?
No. This is not TCM mysticism or woo woo. It's clinical care. You come in, you lie on a treatment table, needles are placed in specific points on your lower legs, arms, abdomen, and sometimes head. You rest for 30 minutes.
Most men are surprised at how straightforward and relaxing it is.
Your First Step
Your initial consultation includes:
• A full review medical history
• A personalized treatment plan
• Concrete next steps and a timeline
The sperm you'll have 90 days from now is being built right now. The best time to start was three months ago. The second best time is today.
